Title
MANCHESTER BAROQUE
Farewell Manchester

Jacobite troops seized Manchester in late 1745. A few months earlier, Bonnie Prince Charlie and his sympathisers used a ‘society’ concert to conceal rebellious plans. A significant figure within this series of concerts was Mancunian William Felton (1715-1769). According to legend Felton’s ‘Gavot’, famously re-named ‘Farewell Manchester’, allegedly accompanied the Jacobites’ retreat. First performed on 14 May 1744, this concert is reconstructed by Artistic Director Prof. Dr Pauline Nobes. The programme features Felton’s keyboard concerto and ‘Gavot’, alongside works by Handel, Humphries and Corelli. Performances include Central Manchester and the Swaledale Festival, as well as a side-by-side with Liverpool Early Music Youth Orchestra. Photo credit - Claudia Terpstra
