In its 10th anniversary year, Istante Collective/Baroquestock will stage a chamber version of Salieri’s rarely-performed ‘Falstaff’, starring singers Phil Wilcox and Hilary Cronin and conductor John Andrews. A unique example of an opera buffa with a Shakespearean libretto, ‘Falstaff’ will be the culmination of our ‘Locanda Salieri’ project, marking the 250th anniversary of his death. We hope to add depth to the reception of Salieri as a relatable figure, representing an ability for compromise and artisanal craft. The metaphor of an ‘inn’ (‘locanda’) depicts how he acts as a tolerant ‘host’, integrating the style of major 18th century musical figures.
