Handel’s music for the Cannons estate of the Duke of Chandos is well known, but almost entirely unknown is the sacred music composed by the director of music at Cannons, Johann Christoph Pepusch. This project will present three works in world-premiere recordings: the luxuriously-scored Christmas anthem Rejoice in the Lord, the Vivaldi-inspired (English-language) Magnificat (possibly composed for the dedication of the Cannons Chapel in 1720), and the smaller-scale anthem O Praise the Lord, for SATB voices, two cellos and continuo.
