Hearing voices: The Art Of Fugue
“a table, four chairs, and the river of the human voice”
Performed in the round, the individual lines of the extraordinary four-voice contrapuncti from the Art of Fugue are here inhabited by the players in a string quartet, the music interspersed with contemporary verses from Jan Zwicky’s poetic homage to Bach. Linguistic riffs echo musical techniques, instrumental and human voices weaving intricate and shifting relationships between and within words and music, performers and audience.
“Once again, the moment of impossible
Transition, the bow, its silent voice
above the string. Let us say
the story goes like this.”
