Secret Byrd is an immersive concert experience celebrating the 400-year legacy of William Byrd. A recusant Catholic, Byrd penned his Mass in Five Voices to be sung by secret worshippers under the spectre of hideous prosecution. To accent his courage, artistry, and faith, we have designed a special concert tour with The Gesualdo Six, Fretwork, and director Bill Barclay of Concert Theatre Works, to significant Tudor spaces. A mass is celebrated by five humble Elizabethans. Byrd's Ordinary verses are sung, and Fretwork plays his ravishing fantasias during the Proper mass movements. Bread is broken; while life, and our freedom, is celebrated.
